On Shootings and Gun Control

July 20, 2012 at 2:22 pm (The Serious Stuff) (, , , , , , , , )

Man goes nuts and shoots people up in a theater in Colorado.  Another goes nuts and shoots up people at a picnic in Canada.  That’s just this week.  Bloomberg goes nuts and calls for all kinds of gun control to the point of only criminals will own guns.

Here’s the deal.

Of the thousands of normal, safe responsible gun owners, there is going to be a nut job in the bunch.  And here’s the thing – they don’t look like nutjobs. They have normal lives, they have normal jobs, they are, in the Colorado case, highly educated, highly intelligent with academic honors out the wazoo and a totally clean record. And someday, something snaps.  And someday, they do something they normally would never have considered.

So unless you can go all Phillip K. Dick and Minority Report on everyone’s ass, you will NEVER know who is going to snap and when and why – and even Dick’s method was proven faulty, if you read the story.

So you will never know. So instead, as some people here want, we should regulate everything?  You can’t have a gun cause you might shoot someone.  You can’t have cold pills because you might make Meth.  You can’t have alcohol because you might drink and drive.  You can’t have laundry detergent, because you might make napalm.  You can’t have peanut butter, because you might slip it to some kid who is allergic and cause him or her to die of anaphylactic shock.

Think I’m being ridiculous? ALL of these things have been regulated at some point because of people’s fears, even to the point of kids being suspended from schools because they brought lunch from home.

Yeah, you don’t know who the nut jobs are or are going to be – and never will.  If you were, as an adult, still living with the idea that the world was a safe place, it’s time to get over it.  The world is a rather harsh place, with and without human influence, and it has NEVER been safe. We as humans are just rather good at deluding ourselves into believing we are safe – and are highly shocked when reality rears its ugly head.

So what do you want to do?  Wrap yourself, your lives up in cotton and live in the back of a cave, or accept the reality that we are never exactly safe, just sometimes safer than others?  Live in a bubble of fiction, or accept the pitfalls of being a human? Regulate false harms out of existence, or prepare yourself and your kin for life on the harsh planet we call earth?

It’s on you,
